HONOLULU (April 9, 2012) – The United States Lifesaving Association (USLA) has exclusively designated the C4 Waterman iRescue Board as the official rescue board of the USLA and the C4 Waterman iRescue Sled as the official rescue sled of the USLA. The endorsement sheds light on the newest rescue technology available in the United States.

“C4’s inflatable products are the cutting edge in lifesaving, offering an enhanced level of performance that was unavailable until now,” said B. Chris Brewster, President of the USLA. “They’re light, tough, and transportable, a real innovation.”

Veteran watermen and Hawaii ocean lifeguards Archie Kalepa and Brian Keaulana innovated and designed the range. Together they built and tested each model to make sure it meets the needs of the rescuer and the rescued.

“The best thing about these products is not the longevity or the storage benefits, but the technology,” says Kalepa, who has been an active part of C4 Waterman since 2006. “C4‘s Rigid AirCore technology means that our equipment can go where hard boards cannot, which ultimately makes them safer for both the lifeguard and the victim.”

C4 Waterman’s iRESCUE products do not use regular fiberglass construction, EVA foam or epoxy composite layups commonly employed today. Instead they use C4’s Rigid AirCore Technology, making them tough and unbreakable tools, capable of performing well and surviving heavy situations without damage.

Well, we had a great time.  Horizontal rigging sounds a bit “out there” and very un-precise.  However… that is exactly what went down (well, a least across).  Pat and the crew ran through half a dozen scenarios ranging from confined spaces, small and large spans, tensioning systems, mass evacuation systems and everything in-between.

General topics included Taglines (simple handlines and major taglines… also known as off-sets), Dynamic Directionals, Highlines Configurations and Tensioning Systems, Gin Pole and A-Frame set ups and Reeving Systems (Norwegian and English versions).  The week ended on building Twin and Quad Bundled Highlines.

The tensioning systems were amazing!  The physics involved in this is to much fun… when everything is laid-out and everything is in front of you and making sense…  the whole confusion of “over-building” simple systems and obscenities thrown out at people for  under-building systems (you’re going to kill someone!) is done away with.  General principles, simple physics that we see day in and day out and knowledge of the gear is really key.  Ooops… did I push a button on this?  It is really fun to learn new things when “sacred cows” are slaughtered.

Physics is much like life… most of what we need to understand is invisible, but the ramifications literally hold the earth together.  Mind boggling but humbling to be a part of.  The images taken here from The Lab is but a small portion of what was covered.  The video segments will be added to Rescue Response Gear TV very soon, so stay tuned.

Because of your donation, we were able to identify a serious safety concern in the community. Many of the families are using used medical syringes as electrical switches. They run a wire from one end to the other and place a small piece of metal between. By closing the syringe will turn on the light and pulling it apart will turn it off. This, of course is extremely dangerous. ERSLA is currently evaluating the best way to resolve this issue in the community. Without your donation, we would not have had the opportunity to do a fire safety inspection and this issue may have gone undetected.

Day 1 of this rope technician’s skills course is a day for the purpose of learning the rigging theory that supports sound and reliable manipulative tripod and quad-pod skills congruent with the requirements of NFPA 1670 and 1006 Technician level. Basic force multiplier theory of artificial high directional portable anchors is a key component of this Module. Days 2-3 we will fine tune our back-tying skills as they apply to guying mono-pods and bi-pods. Intermediate force multiplier theory that is applicable to portable anchors, including a working understanding of tension/compression, coefficient of friction and resultant force are key components of this Module. Days 4-5 will advance the practitioner’s knowledge when rigging high directional anchors for horizontal systems, and for advance systems that require the rigging of multiple resultants on one anchor. Not only do we continue with advanced applications of Mono-pods, bi-pods, and tripods, we will explore the relationship between compression and tension and how this knowledge can help create elevated points in seemingly impossible locations.
