Peak Rescue Day 1 SRT Descending Devices

Share

An amazing April day. Sunny and warm and lots of great people learning about rappel devices and working and edge properly.

Descent devices are or can be, a personal preference. They all have pros and cons built in to them. Some are great for pick-offs, general lowers and heavier loads, others can be (as well) but modifications are needed. All descenders or rappel devices here are perfect for single person lower or rappel. This video IS NOT a how to, but a Brand In Use look at what the product looks like when in use. There are certainly different views on SRT (single rope technique) and two rope (main/belay) systems. This video shows both. For more information on techniques and products, go to www.rescueresponse.com.

Knots, Hitches, Bends And Anchors: The Basics

Share

An important part of any rope access system are anchor points and knots. With the help of Peak Rescue and Raven Collective Media, Rescue Response Gear put together these short videos.

This system is used to anchor to multiple anchor points when one bombproof anchor point is unavailable.

Knots and bends are the critical points at which people and systems are joined to the rope. The ability to recognize and tie correct knots is indispensable to the rescuer. Carelessness that results in an improperly tied knot has the potential of lower strength.
Thank you Peak Rescue Institute for letting us work with you on this.

Rescue Response Gear’s “New HQ”: Training Center,Rigging Lab, Studio

Share

The Secret is out, Rescue Response Gear has moved into a new facility. This larger facility will house not only the office and warehouse for RRG, but a new training facility called the Rigging Lab. This will also make an ideal filming studio for Raven Collective Media to film any technical rescue, rigging, arborist, rope access or safety training workshops.

The reason for doing this? Simple. Rescue Response Gear is spreading it’s wings to embrace an holistic approach to rescue and rigging through the use of video education, training workshops and human and soulful media projects (Raven Collective Media Video). By using streaming video, which came first out of the need to assist in technical sales, we have now  moved towards a more helpful expression of what we (RRG) can do to assist clients with systems and thus gear (education). Our suppliers quality products will be showcased by our “Brand in Use” approach through creative and branded video pieces.

Our Rigging Lab in our new facility will host most of these training workshops and will double as the studio where Raven Collective Media will film these hosted events as well non-hosted RRG training events. Some of the training will be done by ATS, Peak Rescue and VRS, along with Pat Rhodes of RescueRig.

The quality gear being used will come from suppliers such as CMC, Sterling Rope, Petzl and Rock Exotica, just to name a few. We will have more information coming out soon about our first rigging training in January 2012 being held in the Rigging Lab.

Rappel and Pick-Off Training Video

Share

In rescue, rappelling is a common method for quick patient access from above when climbing down to the patient is impractical or unsafe.

The pick-off is a rescue method whereby the rescuer either rappels or is lowered from above to the victim. The rescuer secures and transfers the victim to the rescuer’s system. Here are two videos showing this method by Peak Rescue and COSAR and filmed by Raven Collective Media.

A Tensioned Guiding Line: 600′ +

Share

A guiding line is an independent rope system along which the load travels while being lowered by the main line. The guiding line is anchored top and bottom and a tensioning system at the most logical end is used to vary the amount of deflection. The guiding line is used to keep the load away from the obstacles by the minimum amount necessary. If the load were moving down a cliff face that I must not touch, then a few inches from the face is all the deflection needed. Once the guiding line is used to create a major defection, it is no longer being employed properly.

To construct the guiding line, build an anchor on the bottom, away from the cliff face. One end of the line will be anchored there and the other end will be anchored at or near the main system anchor. The tensioning system needs to be placed in a very convenient area; make sure you have enough rope for the deflection. The load is rigged for lower and the a pulley is attached to the main litter attachment point and rigged to the guiding line.

As the load is lowered, the guiding line can be tensioned and slacked as needed. This is not a highly tensioned system, so keep the load close to the face as possible and do not use this for long distance travel over less than vertical terrain.

Presented by Rescue Response Gear and Kudos to Peak Rescue Institute and Sterling Rope for all their help and assistance.

Greetings to the new kids on the block: The MPD and Torrey

Share

The MPD is a major advance in hardware for technical rope rescue. This multi-purpose device performs all functions for main lines, belay lines, tag lines and haul lines and do so in under two (2) minutes.

When Matt Adams (our in-house techie) suggested we give this thing a whirl and actually time a set up (he thought we could set up a 5:1 system in less than 2 minutes), we all thought it was a great idea. We headed to Redmond Fire Department and drug out Randy (you many remember his cameo appearance and swan dive off a cliff at Smith Rock State Park) and have him lend us his “weight” for rigging and filming. We were very excited at showing off this new piece of gear.

The other side of the story and “someone else” we were really excited about showing off was Torrey (my son) and a good friend Adam Ermatinger. They both had worked on a number of projects with us (RRG video series) as well as with Zion Pictures, and are now working at putting projects together under the Raven Film Works label (be looking for more to come).

CMC Rescue has done an exceptional job at providing rescuers with the equipment they need to save lives. They pulled out all the stops on the MPD. Working with Rock Exotica, the plan was to come up with a worthy answer to weight, ease of use, cost savings and efficiency.

The MPD successfully and efficiently controls descents, is a high efficient pulley when used in a pulley system, as well as acts as a progress capture (in the same pulley or mechanical advantage system). It meets BCCTR Rescue Belay Competency Criteria and is NFPA G rated.

New MPD (Multi Purpose Device) is finally out!

Share

An Important New Tool for Professional Rope Rescuers‚ CMC’s MPD Is a Multi-Purpose Device That Performs All Functions for Main Lines‚ Belay and Safety Lines‚ Tag Lines‚ and Hoisting Lines.

Developed during four years of research & testing, the MPD is the next major advance in technical hardware for professional rope rescuers – a multi-purpose device that performs all functions for main lines, belay/safety lines, tag lines and hoisting lines. The MPD can be used to tension high lines and guiding lines. Training and on-scene rigging can be greatly simplified by having a single device. Rescue system changeover from a lowering system to a raising system becomes faster and safer by eliminating the need to switch out and replace hardware.

See more at Rescue Response Gear.

Newly Added: CMC’s MPD User Manual- The MPD device reduces training requirements and simplifies rigging systems.

Newly Added: Video of the MPD (Multi-Purpose Device) in action. The MPD is a multi-purpose device that performs all functions for main lines, belay/safety lines, tag lines and hoisting lines.
