Rappel and Pick-Off Training Video

Share

In rescue, rappelling is a common method for quick patient access from above when climbing down to the patient is impractical or unsafe.

The pick-off is a rescue method whereby the rescuer either rappels or is lowered from above to the victim. The rescuer secures and transfers the victim to the rescuer’s system. Here are two videos showing this method by Peak Rescue and COSAR and filmed by Raven Collective Media.

SMC Announces Guidelines For Permanent Marking Of Gear.

Share

SMC announces guidelines for permanent marking of gear.

Seattle Manufacturing Corporation (SMC) has released guidelines for the proper way to permanently mark their mountaineering, rescue, industrial and work-safety products. This information is intended to serve as a clear and simple guide concerning what is acceptable and conversely, what is not acceptable when permanently marking by engraving into the surface of various types of hardware. It is only acceptable to use a hand held electric type engraver to place identifying marks on hardware. DO NOT strike with a hammer and stamps or ever use other similar methods. Once the marking process has been completed ALWAYS inspect the product for proper fit and function PRIOR to returning it to service. If you ever have concerns or questions you are advised to contact SMC directly at 1-800-426-6251 or info@smcgear.net.

CARABINERS

For carabiners it is recommended to mark along the spine of the frame. DO NOT mark on or near the lock or pivot tabs of the frame and stay away from rope bearing areas. DO NOT mark on the gate. For steel and stainless products use a medium setting with medium to heavy pressure. For Aluminum products use a low setting with light to medium pressure. Depth of engraving equal to the thickness of a piece of paper should be enough to last the life of the product.

PULLEYS

For pulleys it is recommended to mark on the flat outside surface around the axle. DO NOT mark ON OR NEAR the carabiner hole at the top of a pulley or anywhere on the becket of a double pulley. Also, it is important to stay away from all rope bearing areas.

RAPPEL RACKS & BARS, RIGGING PLATES & ROPE PROTECTION

When marking any other hardware items always use caution and stay away from all carabiner holes, rope bearing surfaces and surrounding areas.

COATINGS

Most aluminum products are anodized. Some slight cosmetic oxidation may occur over time and this is a natural occurrence.

Alloy steel parts are typically zinc plated. Engraving these products will remove the zinc plating in that particular area. One advantage of zinc plating is that it will move over and protect the exposed base material (self-sacrificing). This however will eventually lead to the zinc in the area being consumed and may allow rust to begin to form. To help prevent corrosion, periodically wipe down plated products with LPS or a similar product.

As a leading manufacturer of high quality work-safety, rescue, and mountaineering gear; SMC puts a high priority upon providing equipment solutions that address real issues and problems occurring on a daily basis. An ISO9001 company, many of SMC’s products are certified by independent third party institutions like Underwriter’s Laboratories. For 40 years SMC’s goal has been to design and then manufacture innovative gear that sets the standard for quality, reliability, and functionality.

Firefighters & Equipment Help Meet Basic E.R. In Nicaragua

Share

This is Rescue Response Gear’s 2nd post on ERSLA. A follow-up to the Water Filter project. Here ERSLA shows what they are doing and can do with firefighter volunteers and equipment donations in Nicaragua. Rescue Response Gear and it’s staff support ERSLA in this effort.

Firefighter Equipment and Training

ERSLA focuses on three basic needs for sustainable emergency response services – equipment, training and community integration. We are constantly looking for retired or donated equipment that can begin a new life in Nicaragua. By utilizing the Denton program of the U.S. Air Force Reserves, the equipment is loaded and shipped free of charge to Nicaragua using USAF C-17’s.

This, of course, does not mean the program operates for free. Costs include soliciting, organizing, crating, storage, and transporting of equipment prior to being loaded on the aircraft. Hundreds of hours of time and labor are required for meetings and paperwork to balance the political and cultural concerns of the two countries.

The cost for this type of program generally runs between $2,000 and $3,000 per shipment. Consider becoming a sponsor, or contributing time for a shipment of equipment for a place in need.

Equipment is of limited value if the firefighters are not properly trained on how to use it. ERSLA is constantly looking for volunteers through our volunteer and internship programs, who would like to offer time to visit Nicaragua and make a difference. Volunteers can work in training firefighting skills, teaching first aid or CPR, or other areas custom designed to their personal interests. These volunteer vacations can last weeks, months or even a year or more.

For more information contact us through this website.

How you can Contribute?

For more information email us at info@ersla.org
or call 478-787-4889.

To donate, go to www.ersla.org and click the “Donate Now” button to pay through paypal, or send a check to:

BFF/ERSLA
c/o Bend Fire Department
Condega Project
1212 SW SimpsonBend, OR 97702

Consider a gift donation:
Many donors have asked for gift donations in their name for the holidays; others have donated in the name of friends, co-workers,
or family members. ERSLA will make sure to send a note and photo to the gift donor as well. It is a great gift for someone who is hard to buy for.

Thank you for your support.

How to Avoid Counterfeit Versions of Petzl Products

Share

16/02/2011 – Update

More information on counterfeit Petzl products

Counterfeit Petzl products are not a new phenomenon.

Over the years, Petzl has discovered counterfeits or copies of several of its products:
- counterfeit headlamps with the Petzl logo, including headlamps from the TIKKA and MYO lines
- counterfeit copies of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) without the Petzl logo, such as ASCENSION handled ascenders, the ASAP, etc.

February 2011: This is the first time Petzl discovered identical-looking counterfeit PPE products with the Petzl logo.

The four products we found do not meet our safety requirements and are potentially dangerous.

Counterfeit references are:

To our knowledge, these are the only four Petzl products that we have found to be identical counterfeits. No other Petzl PPE products are concerned by identical counterfeits (with Petzl logo).

Attention :

  • An end-user will not be able to tell the difference between these counterfeits and authentic Petzl products (see below for more information)
  • They have serious quality, performance and safety problems.

For these reasons, Petzl decided to alert its end-users and begin legal action against the counterfeiters.

Petzl is fighting against counterfeiting

Over the past several years, Petzl has been fighting to stop the counterfeiting of our products. Our concern is for the safety and satisfaction of our end-users. These actions have enabled us to stop the illegal manufacture of our products.

How do I make sure that I am purchasing an authentic Petzl product?

To ensure that you have purchased authentic Petzl products, be sure to shop at an authorized Petzl dealer. If you are in doubt, contact the distributor in your country. You can find their contact information with the Petzl dealer locator.

Remarks :

  • Production of the old style blue right-handed ASCENSION ascender (B17 R) was stopped in 2009. The only version in production now is the ASCENSION B17 SRG,  B17 WRA, B17 WRN:

Production of the old version of RESCUE pulley (P50) was also stopped in 2009. The only version is production now is the RESCUE P50 A:

What can you do?

  • Only purchase from an authorized Petzl retailer to be sure that you are purchasing a genuine Petzl product.
  • If you have any doubt as to the authenticity of Petzl products, please help us and contact the Petzl distributor in your country.
  • For a list of Petzl retailers, please visit:
    - The Professional Products Dealer Locator
    - The Sport Products Dealer Locator
  • Petzl distributors are currently in the process of cross-referencing and updatingtheir Dealer Locator, but if you happen to notice your business or location is not listed, please contact the Petzl distributor of your country.

Petzl is working hard to stop these counterfeits, which put users’ lives at risk, from reaching the market.

New Release: Tower Rescue For Emergency Responders Digital Download

Share

We really didn’t have any idea as to what we were getting ourselves into. All three of met in a restaurant in Eastern Washington (Grand Coulee Dam… just a small little reclamation site) to discuss the possibilities of doing something nobody had done yet… film high angle rope rescue skills training workshop with the same production equipment used in the making of Titanic and Spiderman and other movies. Rick Johnson of Fluid Images and Reed Thorne of Ropes That Rescue were all on board, so with the third member of the team, myself with Rescue Response Gear, we all formed Highline Productions.

Our first project was slated to be tower rescue for emergency response units and the second for tower workers. As a logical jump off, the projects would include the needs of the fire service, search and rescue, industrial workers, tower workers, rope access personnel and law enforcement. The results were spectacular. Reed nailed the skills portion and Fluid nailed the production and Highline came through with the marketing and distribution side of things.

All that was in 2004… thousands have seen and used both rescue DVDs and learned the techniques well; both as a adjunct to their own training, or as para curriculum to other training organizations or programs. As with all technological advancements, some things need to move over a bit to make room for other advancements. That new addition is digital downloads. So, without further ado… introducing Tower Rescue For Emergency Responders Digital Download.

Also, be looking for the release of Tower Rescue for Tower Workers Digital Download due out in February 2011, as well as a host of other releases due out in 2011.

Lance

We are adding Chapter Previews for these downloads. Here are four of them:
