What is Rope Access?
Rope access refers to a set of techniques where ropes and specialized hardware are used as the primary means of providing access and support to workers. Generally a two-rope system is employed: the working rope supports the worker and the safety rope provides back-up fall protection. For More Information….
Why use rope access?
Modern rope access equipment, techniques, and training can be combined to produce an exceptionally safe, versatile, efficient, and cost-effective way to solve vertical access problems.

Rope access is safe. Independently-certified rope-access technicians uphold an enviable safety record with no fatalities and few lost time incidents while working on rope.
Rope access is versatile. Technicians can apply the techniques in a wide variety of environments, from confined-space penstocks to massive concrete structures to complicated steel installations. Unlike traditional access methods, custom rope-access solutions can be designed to fit various applications quickly and inexpensively.
Rope access is efficient. Systems are installed and dismantled quickly and often require fewer personnel than traditional access methods. Rapid deployment limits disruption to facility operations by minimizing downtime.
Rope access is economical. Fewer personnel, faster completion, less equipment, and minimal downtime mean lower costs.
Who uses rope access and what are the benefits?
For industrial and commercial inspectors, contractors, consultants, technicians, specialists, steeplejacks, firefighters, arborists, foresters, trainers and related inspector, contractor, consultant, technician, specialist, arborist, forester, steeplejack, and trainer companies or their needs for equipment, gear, team building, supplies or a class, course or program.

DIGITAL DOWNLOAD TRAINING VIDEO FROM RESCUE RESPONSE GEAR

(Sisters, OR) Real-time training digital download videos are now available to the rope rescue community. “We have a powerful line of videos on DVD, but felt that immediate download rescue tips would be useful to clients. Phone apps will be one of our directions for emergency responders en route to a type of rescue they want to brush up on,” says Lance Piatt, President of Rescue Response Gear and Raven Collective Media.

Rescue Response Gear is a leading provider of equipment specializing in an experienced staff to help with product rescue details and best recommendations. They’ve produced a number of their own videos in the past, teaming up with 6-time Emmy winning Fluid Images and Ropes that Rescue for this initial launch.

The first projects released for downloads are digital versions of videos Tower Rescue for Emergency Responders and Tower Rescue for Tower Workers. Upcoming is a digital download version of Industrial Rescue After a Fall. With the proliferation of wind and cell towers as an example, local rescuers are increasingly expected to know how to accomplish somewhat herculean rescue feats in these situations.

In producing our original DVD versions we were doing something nobody had done yet, film high angle rope rescue skills training workshops with the same production equipment used in the making of Titanic and Spiderman and other movies,” explained Piatt. “Rick Johnson’s Strada Crane was used on those films and Reed Thorne of Ropes That Rescue came in for the rescue expertise.” Rescue Response played the part of distributor.

Future projects will include downloadable videos for fire service, search and rescue, industrial workers, tower workers, rope access personnel and law enforcement. The sister company, Raven Collective Media, will also be doing videos for other companies and manufacturers in the rescue-rope access industry.

See www.RescueResponse.com for more details. Rescue Response Gear has been in business since 1987 providing gear and assistance to the rescue, fire and rope access industry. Raven Collective Media is a video production offshoot of Response Gear.

New Release: Tower Rescue For Emergency Responders Digital Download

We really didn’t have any idea as to what we were getting ourselves into. All three of met in a restaurant in Eastern Washington (Grand Coulee Dam… just a small little reclamation site) to discuss the possibilities of doing something nobody had done yet… film high angle rope rescue skills training workshop with the same production equipment used in the making of Titanic and Spiderman and other movies. Rick Johnson of Fluid Images and Reed Thorne of Ropes That Rescue were all on board, so with the third member of the team, myself with Rescue Response Gear, we all formed Highline Productions.

Our first project was slated to be tower rescue for emergency response units and the second for tower workers. As a logical jump off, the projects would include the needs of the fire service, search and rescue, industrial workers, tower workers, rope access personnel and law enforcement. The results were spectacular. Reed nailed the skills portion and Fluid nailed the production and Highline came through with the marketing and distribution side of things.

All that was in 2004… thousands have seen and used both rescue DVDs and learned the techniques well; both as a adjunct to their own training, or as para curriculum to other training organizations or programs. As with all technological advancements, some things need to move over a bit to make room for other advancements. That new addition is digital downloads. So, without further ado… introducing Tower Rescue For Emergency Responders Digital Download.

Also, be looking for the release of Tower Rescue for Tower Workers Digital Download due out in February 2011, as well as a host of other releases due out in 2011.

We are adding Chapter Previews for these downloads. Here are four of them:

Green Jobs: Wind Power Provides Dream Job for Climbers

Share

By Jace Shoemaker-Galloway
With a “high” unemployment rate, many people are scrambling to find a job. Whether you or someone you know is hunting for work or simply considering a different career path, turbine maintenance is not only challenging, it is guaranteed to have you reaching for the stars.

Combining climbing and caving techniques with green technology, specialized rope access technicians, also called rope specialists, utilize their techniques to inspect, clean and repair wind turbines, reports the New York Times. According to rope-based service providers and SPRAT members, “Rope access technicians descend, ascend and traverse ropes for access and work while suspended by a harness or a work seat.” For years, these fearless workers scaled the likes of oil rigs, skyscrapers, bridges and mountain cliffs. But today, rope access technicians are keeping our green technology in good working order.

Like most mechanical products, wind turbines require maintenance and repair from time-to-time. And with thousands of wind turbines currently in production in the United States, keeping those turbines blowing in the wind is paramount. Inclement weather, ice buildup and bird strikes can cause damage to the giant fiberglass blades. Tower and blade maintenance includes weather caulking, painting, dent removal, blade cleaning and crack repairs, to name a few. When turbines are not functioning properly or have to be shut down, dollars are wasted.

While no one has been seriously injured or killed on the job, there are risks. Lightning, high winds and bad weather, can shorten a workday. Extreme heat and cold can lead to dehydration or hypothermia. For safety reasons, rope access technicians work in pairs.

As the need for wind energy grows, the demand for these specialized workers will most likely grow as well. If you love the outdoors, don’t have a fear of heights, appreciate a spectacular view and are passionate about climbing, visit the Society of Professional Rope Access Technicians (SPRAT). And be sure to check in with Remote Access Technology for careers in the rope access field.
