The Six Steps of Self-Rescue


Prior to taking any action in a technical rescue situation, following these six steps to prevent further injuries or complications:
Survey the scene (i.e., prevent further injuries by identifying potential environmental or other risks to the rescuer, victim or bystanders).
  • Determine first aid needs.
  • Plan your course of action.
  • Build the rescue system.
  • Double-check the system.
  • Initiate your plan (i.e., administer first aid, self-rescue and or locate assistance).

Basic Tools for Self-Rescue (Every time you "climb".)

Accessory Cord: 6mm or 7mm, 3-4’ lengths with Double Fisherman’s knot
  • Carabiners (Always inspect your equipment closely and often)
  • Cordelette: 17’ of 7mm x 2
    Harness
  • Rope
  • Slings: 24” or longer.
  • KNOWLEDGE: The MOST important tool in every rescue. Instruction and experience is vital to a successful rescue. Proper practice and practice often.

    Self reliance in the vertical environment is mandatory, however, accidents do occur and may require the help of others. Be prepared and be aware; you never know when Murphy might show up.
