The Rock Exotica Omni-Block 1.1 Single is the small sheave diameter version of the ingenious swing plate pulley that sits on a swivel. The swing plate securely gives the operator access to the pulley without having to remove your connector. This ease of access helps to speed up setup and system transition times. Here at RRG we have used the Omni-Blocks in our RAD systems as well as many other systems for this exact reason.
The body of these pulleys are machined out of a solid block of aluminum for an impressive strength to weight ratio. The Omni-Blocks use high efficiency ball bearings and a patented design that gives your rigging system a one of a kind accessibility to a swing plate pulley and a swivel all in one. The swing plate has a push pin release button with a secondary safety catch to protect the user in case of an accidental release. This secondary catch requires a second push of the button, before the user can fully open and extend the sideplate, to access the pulley.
We use this in almost every rigging system we set up and give it a RRG recommendation.
These patented devices revolutionized pulley use when they were introduced in 2005. The Omni Block combines a pulley with a swivel and offers tremendous advantages. It can replace a conventional pulley, carabiner & swivel and is lighter, less expensive and saves valuable vertical space. It also allows installing/removing the rope while the pulley is still anchored.
The Rock Exotica Omni Block is a mix of the old and the new. Rotating swivel pulleys, called blocks in year past, have been around for centuries with drawing dating back to ancient Greek inventor, Archimedes (The first known recorded source of the common pulley system). Originally the first such pulleys were carved and fashioned from actual blocks of wood reinforced with metal banding to prevent the wood from splitting under load. Up to now, rescue pulleys have been the standard side swing plate models that involve rotating the side plate and the introduction of the rope into the sheave. Increased strength is cited as the main reason that life safety pulleys are designed this way.
Incredibly quick to attach, the Rock Exotica Omni Block 1.1 is a strong (23 kN), swiveling rope block/pulley. This miniaturized version of the Omni Block maintains all the features of its predecessors, but accomplishes it with a weight of only 6.5 oz (182 gm). It also has a feature to permanently lock the plate with a screw. Like RE’s popular swivel connector, these pulleys eliminate twisting from rope rigging systems with smooth, ball bearing action. Each precision fabricated alloy block has a unique button activated release feature that allows instant access to the sheave for midline attachment. The milled alloy attachment eye is large enough to accept most carabiners and snaps.
